Correlation of Magical Thinking and Self-Esteem in Patient with Psychotic Disorders

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives：We hypothesized and tested that patients with psychotic disorders had significantly more magical thinking than normal controls and that this thought pattern was correlated with lower self-esteem.
Methods：30 patients with psychotic disorders (schizophrenia 23, schizophreniform disorder 2, schizoaffective disorder 2, delusional disorder 1, brief psychotic disorder 1, psychotic disorders not otherwise specified 1) and 45 normal persons were included in this study. Magical thinking, perceptual aberration, and self-esteem were assessed using the Magical Ideation Scale (MIS), the Perceptual Aberration Scale (PAS), and the Self-Esteem Scale (SES), respectively. Patients’ psychopathology was evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Comparison of the scores of each scale of 2 groups and correlational analysis were conducted.
Results：Compared with normal controls, the patient group showed significantly higher MIS and PAS and lower SES scores. In control group, there was positive correlation between the MIS and the PAS, while the SES were negatively correlated only with the MIS. In patient groups, the MIS and PAS were negatively correlated with the SES score, while only the MIS retained this correlation after controlling the PANSS score. There were positive correlations among the MIS, the PAS, and the PANSS. The MIS had positive correlation with the positive symptom and excitement factors of the PANSS. The SES had negative correlation with the positive symptom and depression factors of the PANSS.
Conclusion：At least, in acute psychotic phase, low self-esteem of psychotic patients may be correlated with magical thinking, and thus with psychotic symptoms.
